Get Out of Your Tent

My younger brother Joseph was a major part of my decision to write and share my stories. Last year he
started sending out letters about his walk with God and the struggles that he was going through along with the
insight that he had gained. I received this letter from him this week and wanted to share it with you. I hope
this letter helps you as much as it helped me.
"Hope everyone is having a wonderful week! I heard a very inspirational message at church on Sunday that I
feel I need to share with everyone for 2008. The message is called "Get out of your tent" and is found in
Genesis 15:1-5. To give you the cliff notes version, the scripture is about God coming to Abram(Abraham)
and even though he is talking to the maker of the universe, Abram is unhappy because he realizes that he is
getting old and he hasn't had any children. So God told Abram to come out of his tent and "Look up at the
heavens and count the stars-if indeed you can count them." Then He said to him, "So shall your offspring be."
This story at first glance can be easily overlooked, however, it is often the perception that we have for our
lives. Abram looked at his current circumstance, looked at how old he was and the fact that after all these
years still no children. Abram was limiting himself because of the way he saw his life. In his mind he was
already planning to have one of his servant be an heir, but God said get out of your tent and look to heaven,
get out of what is limiting you and look toward God, get out of the way you look at your life and look at your
life the way God sees you. And God fulfilled His promise giving him descendants as numerous as the stars in
the sky and grains of sands on the shore.
Are there things that are limiting you from receiving the abundance of blessings from God? If so come out of
your tent and "Look up at the heavens" and see all the stars in the sky that God created. Surely if God can
create such a wonderful sight, God can bless you with whatever your heart desires and deliver you from the
challenges that you are struggling with in your life. Whether it is success, a good relationship, a happy family,
inner joy or whatever it is you want, God can fulfill it for your life. But you need to be willing to come out of
your tent, come out of what is limiting you.
What was limiting you in 2007 from having joy in your relationships? Are you holding unforgiveness, anger,
disappointment, negativity, pride, or regret in your heart from things of your past? In the Bible Peter asked
Jesus how many times should he forgive his brother and he thought maybe seven times might be a fair limit.
But Jesus said "seventy times seven" which of course does not literally mean 490 times, but rather that the
number of times are not to be counted (Mtt 18:21-22). Come out of your tent and look to God for the
strength to let it go.
I am reminded of the positive message from Meet The Robinsons, "Let go of the past and keep moving
forward." Are you limiting yourself by your lack of confidence, discouragement, fear of failure, or worry?
Come out of your tent and look to God to overcome those limitations. You may have had poor self esteem or
a mentality of never achieving success in 2007, but you have the power to decide that you no longer want
those things in your life. Jesus told his disciples that "if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will
say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you." If
you act on faith and work towards your goals and overcoming challenges God will bless you.
God loves you and wants you to live happy, blessed and abundant lives so you can be examples for other
people lost in this world. But you need to be willing to lay your limitations and perceptions of yourself at the
alter and look at your life through God's eyes. When you can bring yourself to surrender your limitations to
Him and get out of the tent God will fulfill His promise.
If this message was helpful in getting you fired up for 2008 and you have never received Jesus Christ as your
Lord and savior or if you know God, but have distanced yourself from Him and you want to come back home
please pray this prayer.
God, I need you. I know that I am a sinner. I have done things that I know are wrong. I'm sorry... please
forgive me. I believe that Jesus came to die on the cross, in my place, to take away my sins. I believe that He
was buried, and on the third day, rose from the grave. I believe that He is ascended into heaven and sits at
Your right hand. Please write my name in the Lamb's Book of Eternal Life. I open the door of my heart and
ask that You would come inside of me by the power of Your Spirit. Lord, reveal Your presence in my life as I
live for You. Bring all of the fruit of Your Holy Spirit upon my life that I may live abiding in your abundance,
until the day that I finally see You face to face."
In Jesus' name I pray, Amen!
GOD IS LOVE,
Joseph
